On behalf of the The East Cork Harbour Marathon Organising Group I am writing to express my sincere gratitude to you for the outstanding work carried out by all at our inaugural sell-out event.
Saturday August 20th 2016 marked the beginning of a new venture for our community when we played host to the first ever East Cork Harbour Marathon running event. The day was a massive success with over 1,000 athletes registering to participate in the event which was based in Aghada and included a choice of the following race distances; Full Marathon (26.2miles), Half-Marathon (13.1miles) and 10k.
The day was one of true celebration and heroism as both athletes and community volunteers combined to produce a fantastic spectacle which will live long in the memory. Our vibrant community spirit came to the fore with over 300 volunteers offering their services to the event. The volunteer effort took the form of roadside and carpark stewarding, start and finish line co-ordinators, food and drink distributors and numerous other key roles. Without this outpouring of generosity from all members of our community this event would not have taken place and we are so grateful to everyone for their selfless efforts on the day and indeed throughout the many months leading up to it. One of our primary goals as an organisation is to raise funds to support our local community and Marymount University Hospital and Hospice. We are delighted to report that due to the extraordinary generosity of our many supporters and sponsors we were able to donate the following from the proceeds of last year’s event; over €7,500 to Marymount University Hospital and Hospice, over €2,700 towards the restoration and development of The Rostellan-Whitegate People’s Running and Walking Path, and €500 to The Friday Club. The Friday Club is a voluntarily run social group in Aghada which caters for all in our society who are looking to connect and share company regardless of age. Funds have also been used to develop Community Fitness Classes in the form of a new Spin Cycle Studio and Circuit Hall at Aghada GAA Grounds. This new initiative ‘East Cork Harbour Fitness’ is inclusive of all fitness abilities and ages and aims to help people optimise psychological as well as physical wellbeing. Lastly, a date for your diary. Next August 12th 2017 will see us do it all over again at the second running of East Cork Harbour Marathon! We would be thrilled to have you with us again as a participant or as a volunteer. Everyone’s effort matters.
Ní neart go cur le chéile,
Míle buíochas do gach éinne,
Is mise le meas,
